I have heard anecdotes on steam powered buses from my mother. Here are some details from the book "The first wheels roll into India"

In 1903, Samuel John Green of Simpson & Co, Madras, built India’s first steam car and caused a sensation on the roads of the city. The Madras Mail hailed its appearance as the beginning of “a new industry for Madras.” Two years later, Simpson’s built the first steam bus. It ran between Bezwada (Vijayawada) and Masulipatam (Machilipatnam) in what was possibly the first motor bus service in the country.

I remember making a lot of trips on the 'கரிவண்டி' which is what the coal/steam-powered bus was called by the locals in places like periyakulam, madhurai, nilakkkottai, palani, kodaikkanal etc . The cleaner boy or the conductor used to start turning a handle on the side of the bus an hour or more before the bus starts and the smell of burnt coal will fill the air. The advent of the பெட்ரோல் வண்டி' in later years was a big event.
